Country doctor Jessica pursues her dreams

Jessica faced a long and challenging journey with six years study to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Queensland’s James Cook University.

“My mum and dad never considered that going to university was even conceivable.”

The Country Education Foundation in Yass helped Jessica by paying for her text books and medical equipment each year, which made a big difference to her and her family.

Jess believes that a big part of getting the assistance was having someone saying “you are doing a good job, keep going – we are proud of you and you are making a difference”. She said it also helped her family realise their dreams.

Dr Jessica Weekes is now working as a GP in rural Victoria, following her dream of providing much needed medical assistance to country people.

Young people in the country face more barriers to education than their metropolitan counterparts, which is why we support the Country Education Foundation, who help students in the country overcome these extra obstacles.
