If you’ve ever worked in hospitality, you know how important teamwork is. Just ask Origin’s Risk Management team. In December they worked together with The Big Issue to host a Christmas celebration for their magazine vendors in Sydney.
The Big Issue provides homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people with the opportunity to earn an income, become an active member of the community, and make positive changes to their lives. Vendors buy copies of The Big Issue magazine for $3 and sell them for $7, keeping the difference.
Through volunteering, the Risk team was challenged to try something new. Instead of undertaking their usual tasks - identifying and managing financial risks within Origin - they spent the afternoon preparing, cooking and serving food to the vendors.
Volunteer Sam Ngai, a Senior Risk Analyst enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds. “It was good to hear about their life experiences and how an organisation like The Big Issue has helped them improve their life. I know everyone enjoyed the volunteering event,” he said.
Chris Campbell, The Big Issue NSW State Manager, appreciated the extra help. “The Origin volunteers were great. The food was amazing, we had live music, and the vendors loved it. The vibe was very positive with several vendors taking the opportunity to stand up and reflect on their year and express their gratitude to The Big Issue,” he said.
Team volunteering is a great way to build engagement, improve relationships, and increase motivation and morale in the workplace. Origin Foundation’s Give Time program gives employees access to paid volunteer leave so they can give their time and skills to help our community partners.
